16mm vs 14mm Pickleball Paddles for Elbow Pain

Updated 2026-10-16 · Data: 82 paddles from manufacturer spec pages · Methodology

Not medical advice. The Arm Score is an editorial estimate from published manufacturer specs (see the methodology); no study has validated it, and evidence linking paddle specs to elbow injury is limited. If you have elbow pain, see a physician or physical therapist.

Thicker cores are usually marketed as softer, more controlled and lower-vibration; thinner cores as crisper and more powerful. Is a 16mm paddle actually easier on your elbow? Nobody has published a controlled study on paddle core thickness and elbow injury, so here's what the published specs can and can't tell you.

Same paddle, two thicknesses

The cleanest comparison is the same model in both thicknesses. In our dataset, 7 models come in matched 16mm/14mm versions:

What the numbers show

Our honest take

If arm comfort is your priority and you're choosing between two versions of the same paddle, 16mm is the conservative pick: it is what manufacturers describe as softer, and you give up a little pop. If you need more power, a 14mm foam core (e.g. CRBN CRBN³ TruFoam Waves, score 78) still scores well. Weight, grip size and technique likely matter at least as much as 2mm of core.
